Socializing

Don't blindly believe everything about Pit Bulls and safety with children that you will read in popular books printed with an abundance of pictures of kids sitting on top of or next to Pit Bulls always labeled x with friend. I prefer to rather be safe than sorry.
To avoid dangers and tragic consequences you must take socializing very seriously.
Socializing must start at a very young age to ensure that you will be able to foresee any tendencies long before they become a problem. Keep in mind that Pit Bulls are very sensitive to scolding, especially when young and need never to be struck. Most Pit Bulls are naturally good with people, but they are by nature a very capable predator and a rank bound pack animal. A dog that has never been subjected to harrasment by children might not recognize that he has a lower rank than any child and may try to climb the ranks or just nip in a disciplinary fashion. Taking our ridiculous soft exteriors resistance to bites, it could be very serious.
An accident happens in a flash and why ever take a chance. Never bring a dog that has grown up elsewhere into your family without great caution or if you have young children. If you can't keep him with or around kids - I don't care how good he is - he's not staying.
It doesn't hurt to socialise even the most hardcore pit prodigy not only with children but even with other animals. This does not lessen any other ability!
You are your dogs mentor and his Judge should things go wrong, so please teach him what is ok and what is not.

I just want to illustrate the severity a dog attack can pose with this little bitch that I sold as a pup 1992.

The female on the picture doesn't look like much weighing 22 kg, but in 1995 she killed a burglar fleeing from a neighbouring yard over the wall. Biting him in the groin and neck, all lasting 2 - 3 minutes the time it took her owner to wake up, exit the house and call her off.
When I last heard she was eleven years old and has never shown any aggression to the three children in the family nor their friends, she is reserved against grown men. Is she dangerous? No she does know right from wrong and in her world she protected her home which should be anybodys right.

The owner suffered no legal difficulties as his wall was 2,1 m tall and sign posted.

If it says High Voltage don't climb the tower and touch the wire.
